HISTORY
Following several controversial events the Maltese show scene in 1999 a group of ladies decided it was time to have another dog club, this time administered solely by women. They got together and founded the Maltese Ladies Kennel Association which since has grown from strength to strength. It was the first dog club managed solely by women in Malta. Its aim being to organise all breed championship shows.
Natasha Agius, Lara Tabone and Melanie Theuma had been toying with the idea of founding a new club on the island for quite some time. They met everyday at one of the local dog clubs, and sometimes spoke of the idea of founding a club administered solely by women. However, they never gave it much thought.. Following several controversial events in the Maltese show scene in 1999, however, they began to take the idea more seriously. The subject cropped up one evening at a dog training session where Ms Vikki Bonello offered her help and encouraged them to further their idea. That same year, the Maltese Ladies Kennel Association was founded under British Rules and Regulations, the committee was elected during a meeting at the Les Lapins and was made up of five members: Ms Vikki Bonello as President, Ms Lara Tabone as Secretary, Ms Melanie Theuma as Treasurer, Ms Moddy Borg as Assistant Secretary and Ms Joyce Orsini as Assistant Treasurer. Due to personal reasons at that time Ms Natasha Agius could not make it on the committee but was always there to offer her help and support in times of need. During this meeting the rules and regulations were layed down with the help of Frank Borg, who also designed the logo for the association.
The entire committee worked hard in those early days to get the association moving and subscribe its first members. They managed to get many sponsors and promised their first members to work hard to improve the Maltese dog show scene as best they could, a promise they managed to keep to this present day. When the first day for entries for the first show arrived, all had butterflies in their stomachs, because all were afraid that the turnout would be poor. But dog lovers trusted the committee and at the first show was a success! Over 250 entries, an outstanding number considering Malta's size. The MLKA’s first show was held at the Naxxar Trade School in January 2000. The judge for this show was Mrs D A Kenis Pordham.
The MLKA is a founder member of the Maltese National Canine Federation and is now under the auspices of this same Federation.
Ten years have passed since the Maltese Ladies Kennel Association was founded 1999. It has grown stronger each year thanks to its sponsors and members who have constantly supported it in its shows and activities. The committee would like to thank Mr. Frank Borg, Ms. Antoinette Hili and Mr. Lino Hili for their ongoing help and support as well as to all of its sponsors and members for making the MLKA what it is today. Thank you all!
